Cleaning Up Clearing Out

I haven't picked up a needle in several weeks. I have been busy or should say, focused on doing a massive purge of my sewing inventory. As of June 12th, eight very large totes have been filled and the contents donated. I am going through my sewing inventory item by item. Found some items I forgot I had.

When I moved into my current apartment my sewing inventory had been packed by the movers. I did unpack everything and set up my sewing room. However, I've come to realize that this sewing room will never be like what I had in a former rental with open space and mobility. When I work in my current sewing space, I feel claustrophobic, cramped and unable to move around like I want to. I have tried different furniture arrangements to no avail. This is my last sewing room. No more.

I am not getting younger. I don't need everything I have amassed with my sewing. Realistically I won't be doing all the projects I would like to do. I don't have the time (as in I am getting older), interest or desire. My interests have evolved and changed.

In doing the clean out or brutal purge, I set some parameters on what I was going to keep due to what I wanted to spend my time working on. Three areas only. Cross stitch. Quilting. 18" doll clothes. While sorting my inventory and letting go of things, I asked myself, "Will this contribute to those three areas?" If not, it is being donated. If yes, I then asked myself, "Is this item really a keeper? Do I really want this item and keep it or is it time to donate it?"

My neighbor has been a God send in that he has supplied heavy duty totes with lids and as I fill them with whatever I am donating, he then removes the tote and brings new ones to fill up again. I know the items will be used by other craft enthusiasts. His offering to help with lifting has been so appreciated.

The end goal of all this is a more open workable, walk around space in my sewing room. A room where I want to spend time in there creating and doing what I enjoy - working with needle and thread.

Health wise, I take each day as it comes. I have good days. I have not so good days. I have fibromyalgia and diabetes. Prior to getting covid and pneumonia in both lungs November 2023, I was recovering from exposure to black mold due to conditions in my last rental.

In February 2025, after being prescribed a new medication, I ended up in the local ER. I had taken the prescribed dose, gotten up in the night to go to the bathroom and awoke to find myself laying on the floor in front of my cat's litter box in a pool of vomit, vomiting two more times. I had passed out, hit my head and been unconscious for 30 minutes. My head hurt and after getting up off the floor I felt a lump on the back of my head. Managed to get back to bed and fell back to sleep. Later in the morning while discussing what happened with the nurse I shared that my head really hurt and when I drew back my hand after touching the area that was painful, I saw my hand was covered in blood. I drove myself to the ER. Xrays and other tests revealed nothing broken.  I did have to have metal sutures put in as the head laceration was deep. As it healed, the itching was intense.

As I shared earlier, I haven't done work with needle and thread for quite sometime. Haven't been motivated to. I have worked on jigsaw puzzles with Tiggy snoozing nearby keeping me company. Bought a new puzzle table to use when doing my puzzles. Stepped away for bit and Tiggy jumped on it. The table tilted and five days worth of puzzling landed in a heap on the floor. Tiggy just sat there in disbelief or maybe it was shock. I cried. I carefully picked everything back up and managed to have everything back to together by day's end. Was missing two edge pieces but found them later after saying a short "help me find them, Lord" prayer. They were still attached together in spite of having flown across the room. Prayer, in whatever format, no matter the length, works.

I have not done a whole lot with my blog. There's been a shift in my heart regarding my blog.  Again, lack of interest or desire and little motivation to spend time on it. I have started to entertain the idea that perhaps it is time to turn the page, end the chapter and close the book. As my current cross stitch project, Ecclesiastes 3:1 states, "A time for...and a time for...". I started blogging around the time of 2011 or so. I started with sharing my sewing 18" doll clothes. So much life has happened since then. A divorce in 2012, my dad's death in 2013 then my mom's death in 2021, several moves or relocations, health issues...as scripture states "A time for..."

Having just said that, my blogging journey has been a enjoyable one in that I've met some very beautiful people. Kathi from California, Marilyn from Utah, Sandi from Ohio, Abbie from Ohio, Robin from Virginia and Clara from Maryland. I have learned alot about needle and thread (hand stitched and machine sewn) and have grown and been challenged with my work.

I end this post by saying I am not sure what is in the future, but I know who holds my future and I trust Him. Explicitly. No questions. Praising Him for wonderful memories as a result of my blogging endeavors.

May the Lord bless you and keep you.

Abbie Jean and beloved fur buddy, Tiggy.

Completed puzzles are donated to local library for their patrons that like to do jigsaw puzzles. An area in the library has been set up for them to work on the puzzles. If the library doesn't want them, I gift to others that enjoy doing jigsaw puzzles.

Thrown Out 05/21/25

Abandoned and tossed in garbage. Many pieces were smaller than half the size of a dime. Many pieces were still attached in original packaging-not cut apart. Struggled to keep pieces together when attempting to put puzzle together-wouldn't stay together. Not worth the hassle or my time.

I have six SunsOut jigsaw puzzles left in my jigsaw puzzle stash. Completing them will depend on what I encounter when I open the box. Future purchases of this brand will be done only after long thought!! That's sad as SunsOut puzzle designs are fun ones (due in part to oddly shaped puzzle pieces and overall design or image) to consider and put together.

Finished 07/10/24

Finished Naughty Kittens. Was a fun one to do.  Each time I saw the kitten climbing the drape I would smile.  Mama cat asleep on the chair, knitting unraveling, yarn balls going everywhere and kittens having fun.  The pieces were good sized and the unique shape of each piece made it a quick put together. I would share a picture of the finish if it was available. I took the puzzle apart and got it ready to take to the library.  Went over and sat down in my stitching chair and realized I didn't take a picture of the finish before breaking the puzzle down. I take pictures of puzzle finishes so I can remember which ones I've done so I don't duplicate purchases.

Goal to Finish - End of Year 2025

Top section done.

Progress as of 05/23/25.

Ecclesiastes Chapter 3 Verses 1 and 2  are completed.

Working on page 4 of 14 pages.

Future starts...

I've wanted to do a Linda Myers and Paula Vaughan design.

Quilt Show by Linda Myers.

The wedgewood blue 28ct evenweave fabric I ordered arrived in the mail. Just need to pull the threads and prep the fabric.

Sunflower Romance by Paula Vaughan. Blends my love of the old west and settling of the prairie with my favorite color of yellow and flower - the sunflower. The pale yellow 28ct evenweave fabric I ordered arrived in the mail. Just need to pull the threads and prep the fabric.

The above design is from this book.

Will also be doing another Paula Vaughan design.  Iowa's state flower is the wild rose.  The pale pink 28ct evenweave fabric I ordered arrived in the mail. Just need to pull threads and prep the fabric. Will be stitching the design using both light and dark roses.

I collect ceramic schoolhouses.

I would like to start this one. I will change out the 14ct white aida for either a white or ivory 28ct evenweave.

Lastly, would like to stitch this design. I had started this one several years ago and had much of the upper left-hand corner diagonally stitched.

I was able to find a replacement and ordered it. I cut the chart's picture and the particulars to fit into my project bag.

I will switch out the fabric for a 28ct wedgewood blue evenweave fabric. Do not like the texture of the fabric that came with the kit. It's too coarse and I don't like the shade of blue.

Embroidery WIPs

Am not currently working on an embroidery project.

Current Machine Sewn WIPs

Clicking on a picture will enlarge it.

Current machine sewn projects being worked on or have been started but are now in the wings waiting to be worked on.

All of the blocks for this quilt top have been embroidered. I just need to wash, press and square up the blocks and then sew the quilt top together. I plan to sash between the blocks, use cornerstones and sew on solid fabric borders. Will be long arm quilted.

With this quilting project, I have a confession to make.  I put this one away because I got hung up on fabric for the petals.  I've never done a EPP project before.  I saw a completed Grandma's Flower Garden quilt and wanted to do one.  I had a quilt shop owner show me how to do one petal and then attach the petal to another petal.  I bought a package of hexagon shaped papers and the rest is history.  With the fabric, I am using scrap fabric from making quilts and 18" doll clothes.  I wanted a snippet of my former projects with this quilt.  Well, I've had a log jam with my thinking and am unable to move forward and do the petals or the EPP because I have quilts projects I have yet to do knowing I will have scrap fabric from those projects.  Odd thinking I know.  That's how my brain works.  I eventually had a light bulb moment when I made the decision to use scraps I have currently and future scrappy quilts will showcase or display the fabrics that wouldn't be in this Grandma's Flower Garden quilt.  Having "seen the light" with that thought, I still have to decide on how I want to do each ring of the flower - matching like fabric or scrappy as in a different fabric for each petal of each ring in the flower.  Then I have to decide how exactly I want to do the rings of the flowers - one round or ring of all solid and then all print or one round or ring of all print and then all solid?  Then I have to decide what color of fabric to use for the border for around each flower?   So for now I just make the EPP petals and flowers. With this project, I asked a dear friend for some of her fabric scraps as I wanted to have some of her fabrics in my quilt.  She's a quilter too.  Those scraps of fabric will be used for this quilt, my Sunbonnet Sue applique blocks, my FPP Hearts and the FPP Scrap HSTs blocks. Will say this here.  I like working with scraps.  I have watched youtube videos where other quilters do crumb quilts.  I want to make a crumb quilt.  I have bought bags of scrap fabric from an etsy shop owner.  With my quilting fabric, it's like my cross stitch inventory or stash.  I have ... well, let's just say I have enough fabric to make more than a few quilts.

This was my first ever attempt at applique. It's a Sunbonnet Sue and my first and only block for a Sunbonnet Sue quilt top.  I've since learned better techniques doing the Tiny Trio banners.  I still want to make a Sunbonnet Sue quilt.

Need to finish up these 18" doll dresses.  Plan to use KAM snaps instead of buttons or velcro for the back closure.  Used the fabric given to me for making the doll garments.

McCalls Sewing Pattern 3275

Cobbled pattern pieces from McCall's Sewing Pattern 3275 for the bodice front, back and sleeves and Simplicity Sewing Pattern 2768 for the skirt.

Cotton fabric, elastic, serged seams where able to.

Cobbled pattern pieces from McCall's Sewing Pattern 3275 for the bodice front, back and sleeves and Simplicity Sewing Pattern 2768 for the skirt. Cotton fabric, elastic, serged seams where able to.

Two dresses on the left - Avery Lane Designs Pattern. Two dresses on the right - Simplicity 2768 Sewing Pattern

Bodice part of dresses are from McCall's 3275 and skirt is from Simplicity 2768. Shorter sleeve and skirt lengths.

Kaleidoscope Quilt

Purchased precut quilt kits using '30's fabrics from an etsy shop. Followed directions per written pattern that came with the kit. Not happy with results. Did a youtube video search and found directions by Carol Thelen. Explained well. Shared a better technique.  Like the results much better. First 2 of 90 8-1/2" square blocks completed.

Won't be sashing between blocks or rows. Will be long arm quilted.

Started 04/2025.
